The Grand Period of Victorian jewelry (1861 to 1885) saw a sharp change in design from delicate to bold and heralded the introduction of "imitation" jewelry (jewelry made from materials other than gold and precious gemstone). This included the use of gold fill. Agates were ever popular due to the Scottish connection.
